A bad golf shot My experience When I left Belgium 27 years ago, I had never imagined the adventure that was about to start. Twin daughters, 4 assignments, 3 countries, 3 jobs and 19 moves later I can say that the journey was fantastic, rich and intense, sometimes even rough, but it was worth it. My curiosity is not fading away, on the contrary: gaining a multi-cultural experience is an incomparable plus in your life. Trying to understand others while not loosing your own identity is the key to the enjoyment of expatriation. I worked at the Belgian Embassy in Kinshasa for a short while then quickly switched to the private sector to become the assistant to the CEO of a Belgian industrial group. I was in charge of the coordination and communication network of factories covering a huge territory. Autonomy and trust were the major features of this multi task job implying also occasionally creativity and improvisation. When I arrived in Hong Kong I started a magazine for the members of the Belgium-Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce (I hold a degree in Journalism). A few months later I was offered the whole management of the chamber. I still hold this position today, despite an interruption of two years spent from 1999 to 2001 in Ivory Coast.
